Dammit! Dammit! Dammit!
Well, I did try to sleep. Not so successful given Dave is completely hogging the bed and snoring like a very loud piece of machinery.
I got up intending to just screw around and play some poker on the computer. I went to empty the ashtray in the office and as I was walking out to the trashcan in the kitchen I looked out the window and saw those same damn flashes across the street in the woods again.
It's presently storming to the north and south of us - the big green and orange blob on the radar seems to have broken up into two before reaching our area. It's quite humid and I can see lightning flashing and hear thunder rumble in the distance. The flashy lights were far more active tonight, I even saw a small one around the tree near the house. Now, it's possible some of what I saw could have been lightning bugs - they have been out and about lately - but I don't think lightning bugs are bright or big enough for some of the flashes I saw tonight.
So I raced into the office and whipped out the video camera. Dead battery, of course - so I dragged out the cord to plug it in and sat in front of the window. Couldn't see a damn thing, so I turned on the nightshot. Dammit! Now all I see is the white glare from the nightshot on the window. Also looks like it's time to clean puppy snot off the window - yeuck!
I was going to give up - I unplugged the camera and was going to put it away, but then I noticed I had a couple of minutes of battery life from the little bit of time I had it plugged in. So I went outside on the front stoop to see if I could get a better shot.
Nothing.
As soon as I fucking went out there, I didn't see it anymore. I tried the three different versions of the nightshot, each with a slower shutter speed than the other, and I didn't see anything. I did a sweep of the area again, then the battery went dead.
I came inside to plug it in again, and whammo! light show resumes.
It's all over the place over there. Not just one ball appearing and disappearing like last time - there are 3, 4, and 5 balls at a time flying all over the place out there.
How the hell can I get this stuff on tape? Not that I want to be standing outside in a storm like a moron, but it's way too impressive a sight not to record it!
Oh well, back to my observation perch...
